EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
