Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant blasts rocking Tehran, amid claims from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive strike.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
According to eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of thick smoke were seen rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially provide additional information.
Background: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event takes place against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this strike involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with further updates anticipated as events unfold.
