A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic initiatives.
