A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using such drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
